What is Mouth Ulcer and Why do we get it?
Mouth Ulcer, also known as oral ulcer is an ulcer that occurs on the mucous membrane of the oral cavity. It is a sore or open lesion in the mouth. The mouth ulcer may result due to many reasons generally and the exact cause is unknown. It may be due to infections or some sharp objects etc.
Let us now see some home remedies to get relief from Mouth Ulcers:
If mouth ulcer causes a lot of pain, use cold water or ice cubes to treat the affected area. It does not heal the ulcer but relieves the pain.
Cloves for Mouth Ulcer:
Cloves acts as a local anesthetic so chewing a clove helps you to get relief from the pain. You can rinse the ulcer with salt water frequently so that it doesn’t get infected.
Tulsi for Mouth Ulcer:
We know that Tulsi have many medicinal values and health benefits. It acts as an adaptogen that makes us to adapt to the stress. Chew few leaves of Tulsi with water 3 or 4 times a day to treat your ulcer faster and prevents the reoccurence.
Honey for Mouth Ulcer:
Honey acts as a natural humectant and thus helps in retaining moisture and prevents the dehydration. It also promotes the growth of new tissues and reduces the scarring of the tissue. Honey also have anti-microbial properties and helps in faster healing of the ulcer. Honey can be applied alone or in combination with turmeric to make a paste on the affected area.
Poppy Seeds for Mouth Ulcer:
Poppy seeds also known as khus-khus is shown to have cooling effect on the body. Too much heat in the body may cause mouth ulcers according to Ayurveda, so using poppy seeds helps in treating this ulcer. Add poppy seeds to a dry coconut and sugar candy to make it palatable by making payasam with jaggery solution and garnishing with cashew nuts, cardamom and raisins.

Coconut Oil, Dry Coconut and Coconut water are good for our health as they contain rich source of nutrients and minerals. They help in treating the mouth ulcers. Drinking coconut water cools our body down. Chewing of dry coconut or applying the coconut oil helps in healing the mouth ulcer and reduces the pain and inflammation.
Licorice (Liquorice) for Mouth Ulcer:
Liquorice is known as Mulethi, Yashtimadhu and Adhimadhuram. It has many medicinal values. It is found that it contains anti-inflammatory agents and helps in treating the painful ulcers. It is available as a powder or as stems. When its stems are grinded by using a little water, make a paste and apply it on the affected region. If the powder is bought in the stores, disperse it in honey or glycerin of medicinal quality then apply it on the mouth ulcer. Mix a little licorice powder along with turmeric in a glass of warm milk and if it taken 3 or 4 times a day, it gives very good results.
